The Science of Meditation

Regular meditation physically changes the brain. MRI studies show increased grey matter density in areas associated with self-awareness, compassion, and introspection after just 8 weeks of practice.

Meditation reduces activity in the default mode network (DMN) — the brain’s “wandering mind” circuit that’s active during rumination and worry. Experienced meditators show a quieter DMN even when not meditating.

Studies consistently show meditation reduces cortisol, improves attention span, and can be as effective as medication for mild to moderate anxiety and depression.
